Scott Taylor Motorsport wrap up mixed weekend in Perth

Scott Taylor Motorsport has had a mixed weekend in the V8 SuperUte Series’ round at the Bosch Powertools Perth Super 440 with Scott Taylor and Paul Morris both in action at Carco.com.au Raceway.

With the category having four races as part of the weekend, it was Morris who led the line as the veteran finished seventh overall for the weekend having fought towards the top of the field, while Taylor himself endured plenty of mechanical dramas, which included three broken gearboxes, to just miss out on a top 20 finish.

Both showed plenty of pace in Friday’s opening practice with Morris deep inside the top 10, while Taylor’s best time was 17th fastest for the session – the pair both ending a few places lower in Qualifying later that day as Morris qualified P10 and Taylor P22.

In the opening race of the round, Morris finished where he started while Taylor made up a place by the time he reached the chequered flag.

Both drivers were on the rise in Race 2 on Friday afternoon as Morris made a massive jump to finish sixth after an aggressive race from the experienced campaigner, while Taylor comfortably progressed into the top 20.

On Sunday morning, Morris continued with his upward trajectory by gaining another position early on in the 13-lap affair to cross the line in fifth place before finishing the weekend in sixth having been involved with some exciting wheel-to-wheel action with rival competitors.

For Taylor, it was a contrasting day as an extremely tough Race 3 with mechanical issues and dramas saw him end up P22.

Taylor did manage to recover in the final race though as he scored his best result of the weekend with P19 having taken advantage of others experiencing dramas and penalties. Taylor originally crossed the line in P16, however a 15-second penalty post-race for a Turn-1 incident saw him drop three places.

Scott Taylor Motorsport will continue its 2025 V8 SuperUte Series campaign at the NTI Townsville 500 on July 11-13, while Taylor will switch to the Porsche for this month’s Betr Darwin Triple Crown on June 19-22.

“Perth wasn’t a stellar weekend. We went through three gearboxes, so we’ve got a challenge with the gearbox that we didn’t have before, but we have now,” Taylor said.

“We need to look into those issues in the workshop and see what’s causing them. And whilst I was focused on the gearbox, I wasn’t focused on the driving.

“What that does is when the car jumps out of gear or misses a gear, it slows me down and then all of a sudden people are running into you and it’s not necessarily their fault, which is unfortunate for the people around me as a result of a little bit of sloppy driving.

“We’ve got a bit of thinking to do in regards to what’s happening with our gearbox and our clutch.

“We love Perth and it turned it on for us this weekend, which is nice, but we’ll be racing a Porsche up in Darwin before we’re back and looking to repair our pretty damaged Ford Ranger Ute for Townsville.”

“Some big improvements with the Scotty Taylor SuperUtes. Top six there. We made a few changes to the car in the front, which allowed us to get in the fight,” Morris said.

“We still have some speed to find and it was good to find some pace and have some good battles. Not too many words on the truck. And I had a good time. So we’re looking forward to Townsville.”
