Scott Taylor Motorsport ready to rumble in Tassie

Scott Taylor Motorsport’s racing season continues after an extended gap between events in Tasmania at Symmons Plains on May 9-11.

It’s been a near-three month break between the opening two rounds of the Dunlop Super2 Series and Nash Morris is eager to build on what was a tough opening round at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Morris has the advantage of recently competing in Symmons Plains and will aim to build on his solid results competing in Trans Am last month.

Driving the Scott Taylor Motorsport Ford Mustang as part of Tickford Racing’s four-strong line-up, Morris is sure to be among the frontrunners.

It’s a double-attack for the team in Tasmania as Scott Taylor will make his maiden racing appearance at Symmons Plains in the Tyrepower V8 Superutes Series.

The V8 Superutes category is working with Motorsport Australia to develop a parity adjustment system, which Taylor hopes will increase the competitiveness of the STM Ford Ranger.

Action for the pair begins on Friday, May 9 as part of the Repco Supercars Championship Snowy River Caravans Tasmania Super 440 at Symmons Plains.

“I reckon I’ve driven at every race circuit across Australia and New Zealand, but I’ve never competed at Symmons Plains,” said Taylor.

“I’ve driven past it once and I’m looking forward to having a spin around the 2.41km of Symmons Plains. It’s a very small track, but it’s still difficult as there’s the tight hairpin, sweeping corners and some heavy stops, but it’ll be good to tick it off the list.

“I’m still coming to terms with racing the ute and we’ve got some parity changes coming along for the category, so we’ll see how that plays out at this circuit. We’ve all got basically the same tools, so let the best driver win.”

Taylor on potential parity adjustments in Superutes

“The category has been working with Motorsport Australia and a collective of competitors to just make it a bit more robust,” said Taylor.

“If you look at SRO’s BOP (for GT racing), it is a very robust document and with the testing there’s a lot underpinning it. Since we’ve come into the Superutes category, we’ve been helping them out to make the parity more robust and gone testing to make sure they’ve got proper paritisation basically between the various manufacturers and models.

“We just need to do more testing to make sure the parity is spot on.

“Potential changes have been discussed, but whether they change it for Symmons Plains, I’m not sure. That will be up to MA and the category to let us know of any changes if any for this round.

“Our Ford Ranger is wider and more stable, but a bit blunt in the nose, so in a straight line it’s not so good, though in the corners it is better. Hilux has a higher centre of gravity and to paritise the field some robust testing needs to be done. They’ve done a good job so far, but we think there can be enhancements to that like getting an independent party to test the cars.”

Taylor on Nash Morris

“It’s exciting as it’s the second round of six and Nash has been racing quite a bit in between, which is cool. Nash had another test day leading into this round and went well, but as I’ve said it’s a proving round for him to see whether or not he has what it takes at this level,” said Taylor.

“I’m excited to watch him and I’m sure Nash will go well.”

“It’ll definitely be interesting,” said Morris.

“With cold tyres it’s going to be tough, especially for the top five shootout for whoever can get there. The quickest to get their tyres up to temperature will be on pole. Hopefully we’re in it and we have a good weekend.

“I tested the car recently and that went well. I’m still gelling with the car and the hard thing in Super2 compared to the Porsche last year is the tyres aren’t as good, plus you don’t get as many of them. It does make it fun because you’re driving around with less grip, which for a driver is sometimes more enjoyable, but you’re limited with what tyres you got when you test.

“The good thing with Super2 is watching the guys graduating into the main game. They are normally quite competitive straight away. It means the drivers in Super2 are pretty good and you have to win there, then hopefully make the step up to Supercars.

“It’s good to measure yourself against other young drivers that have got some talent.”
