Nash Morris to utilise SMSP experience for Carrera Cup charge

Nash Morris will be hoping his recent experience at Sydney Motorsport Park (SMSP) in a Porsche will put him in good stead for next weekend’s Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia Championship round.

With the popular one-make category having not held a round in Eastern Creek since 2018, a large portion of the field won’t have had experience at the circuit in a Porsche – something that may give Morris an advantage for the event.

The Scott Taylor Motorsport rising star was last behind the wheel of a Porsche at Sydney Motorsport Park in July last year where he enjoyed a memorable weekend in the Carrera Cup’s feeder series, Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia.

Morris picked up two victories in the category’s three races and was one of the shining lights for the round as he navigated the circuit with ease.

Having since progressed to the top level of the Porsche Motorsport Australia pyramid, as well as having the backing of Scott Taylor Motorsport, Morris is in a good position to build on a promising first half of the year.

The Queenslander enters the round on a solid run of form despite a mixed bag of results at the last round at Hidden Valley Raceway, where Morris hovered around the top 10 for much of the weekend – his best result of ninth coming in the third and final race of the round.

More recently, Morris joined team owner and Aussie Racing Cars competitor Scott Taylor in Townsville to take part in the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia Series.

Morris had a strong start to the round before early mechanical issues caused drama, limiting him to a best result of fourth place in Race 3.

The 21-year-old will now focus on his return to the Carrera Cup as part of Supercars’ Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight, where he will contest three races over the course of the weekend.

One of the major highlights of the upcoming round will be the opening race of the weekend, which will take place under lights on the Saturday night in spectacular fashion.

The Panasonic Air Conditioning Sydney SuperNight takes place at Sydney Motorsport Park on July 19-21.

“I am very excited for Sydney and getting back into the Carrera Cup car,” Morris said.

“Coming off a challenging round in Townsville in the Michelin Sprint Challenge where we didn’t have the best weekend with lots of drama, I feel like we now have something to prove.

“Even though I have had previous experience at Sydney Motorsport Park in a Porsche, I don’t think it’s going to give me much of an advantage because I have been seeing a lot of people testing there over the past few weeks.

“I don’t like to have too many expectations. The Carrera Cup field is very strong and everyone is there for a reason.

“It’s going to be a fun weekend and I have faith that Ashley Seward and the STM crew will roll out a competitive car so I can take it to them.

“I am just excited to go there, because I love Sydney Motorsport Park. It’s an awesome track with high speeds. There are different types of corners and it changes a lot throughout, similar to Taupo.”
